          b. Product diversification

In general, there is a high similarity in product diversification of Vietnam and
Thailand, whereas Cambodia is focusing itself mainly on fragrant rice and Laos only
specializes in glutinous rice. Both Vietnam and Thailand are able to produce the same
rice categories including white rice (5%, 15%, 20% broken), aromatic, glutinous rice,
brown and broken rice (Figure 12). Although Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos witnessed
a change in product diversification over the years, Thailand’s rice export structure
remained unchanged over the past 5 years. Thailand targeted its products on a high-
value segment; hence the share value of fragrant rice increased a lot in the total
share. Although there is a decrease in the total export value in 2020, glutinous, brown
rice, and white rice (100%) witnessed an increase of 30%, 61%, and 72% respectively.
Thailand maintains a strong brand name in high-value rice over the years. The increase
of white and fragrant rice as exporters fulfilled pending shipment contracts settled
late last year. According to the Thai Customs Department, rice exports in January
2019 totaled 951,700 metric tons. The main decrease lies in low-quality white rice as
they are witnessing strong competition in the African market.
