Viet Nam has been increasingly integrated into the international community,
participating in signing trade agreements, with 15 FTAs have been signed over the
past 20 years. With these FTAs, Viet Nam’s rice can have opportunities to access high-
end markets, that help Viet Nam to compete better with other countries. Integration
process will help Viet Nam joining deeper in global rice value chain and change the
structure of Viet Nam’s rice production to pass the trade barriers when penetrating
to high-end markets. For example, in the framework of EVFTA, the EU allows Viet
Nam to export 80,000 tons of rice per year with exemption of tax. For broken rice,
quota will not be applied, but 65 EUR/ton will be gradually removed in 6 years. Rice
products will still be facing 5-8% + (EUR 44-138/ton) but will be removed in the period
of 1-5 years.

Thailand has further history of FTA in comparison with other countries. By
2021, Thailand have accessed markets in Australia, Chile, China, Lao PDR, New Zealand,
Japan, etc. FTA have strongly improved the rice production scene in Thailand, strongly
focused on Thai fragrant and jasmine rice, as the two main export rice products in
Thailand, to meet high-quality demands in these countries.
