Overall, the total annual rice output of the three countries reaches around 58
million tons of rice, contributing to ensuring the domestic demand of each country and
other countries. Each country experiences different trends in production. Specifically,
whereas Cambodia output tends to increase significantly, those of Viet Nam and Lao
PDR witnessed a slight decrease. The main reasons stem from climate change and
switching to other crops, which reduced the rice growing area in Viet Nam and Lao
PDR as well as the improvement of rice yield in Cambodia. In addition, Viet Nam,
Cambodia, and Lao PDR are also rice exporters in recent years.
