In Lao PDR, rice is the most essential food crop planted in the Lao PDR and rice
production accounted for over 63 % of the total area under cultivation throughout the
country. This sector is an important income source regarding to 90 percent of rural
households in Lao PDR. Rice is produced in the lowlands and only 11% of output comes
from the highlands. The leading rice-producing localities along the Mekong River are
Vientiane, Khammouan, Bolikhamxai, Savannakhet, Salavan, and Champasak.
