Figure 12: Top countries having the highest consumption of rice per capita in 2020
Sources: FAO (referred by Helgi Analytics (2021).
Cambodia is the 3 country that consumed the highest rice in the world with
rd
around 230 kg/capita (Figure 7). Although the consumption of rice per capita shows
less change, the total consumption of rice reached 4.3 million tons in 2020, an increase
of 15.38% compared to 2010. However, compared to the past, Cambodians consumed
fewer cereals and vegetables and ate more fish, meat, eggs, and pulses. Carbohydrate
consumption fell because of this shift in dietary diversity, whereas protein and fat
consumption increased. The shift in macronutrient consumption in cities has been
more dramatic than in rural areas (FAO, 2012).
Rice is the most important crop in Viet Nam. The consumption of rice per
capita is 7.61 kg monthly in 2020 (table 12), which is higher in rural areas at 8.47 kg/
month whereas only 6.11 kg/month in urban areas. However, Viet Nam is also facing
the same trend as stated in other countries: the consumption of rice has reduced
whereas the consumption of meat, fruit, and vegetables has witnessed a dramatic
increase over the past 5 years. The total rice consumption of Vietnam is forecasted to
reduce from 14.57 million tons to 13.48 million tons during 2025 – 2050 period.
