THE CONTRIBUTION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE SECTOR

Promoting the application of science and technology in agriculture is the foundation to improve the productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness of agriculture, contributing to the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, ensuring food security, social security and income enhancement for agricultural producers and traders. Thanks to the contribution of science and technology, Vietnam's agricultural industry has always won many great achievements, fulfilling its fundamental role and supporting the country's economy. Specifically, outstanding results from the application of science and technology in agriculture include:

1. Improve seed structure, increase crop and livestock productivity.

The application of science and technology in the use of high-yield and high-quality seeds, the adaptation to climate change, the application of mechanization, and the implementation of advanced technical processes are increasingly being enhanced.

In the field of horticulture, the relatively high rate of using certified seeds (or equivalent) for many crops has promoted productivity and production efficiency.

In the field of animal husbandry, livestock subjects were restructured, and priority order was clearly defined in terms of main products from raising pigs, chickens, beef cattle, and dairy cows. The productivity of some major livestock has improved significantly.

In the forestry sector, acacia and eucalyptus varieties have been recognized with high yield and are widely used in afforestation nationwide.

In the fisheries sector, the total fish production exceeded the set target, and the farming structure was adjusted reasonably.

2. Promote agricultural mechanization to improve labour productivity.

In recent years, the application of mechanization in agricultural production has contributed to solving the hard labour stage, ensuring seasonality, increasing labour productivity and reducing post-harvest losses.

Thanks to the promotion of mechanization in agriculture, the average labour productivity of agriculture, forestry and fishery in the period 2016-2020 has reached 6.8%/year, much higher than the set target.

3. Promote the application of high technology, digital technology in agriculture.

The application of high technology in agriculture is also increasingly being replicated such as greenhouse and net house systems combined with the application of digital technology for automatic or semi-automatic control; the application of BigData, IoT, AI in managing crops and livestock, economical irrigation technology including drip irrigation, semi-automatic or automatic misting irrigation according to time or measured humidity and temperature; the application of non-soil farming techniques: hydroponics, growing plants on substrates.

4. Contribute to perfecting the sustainable farming system.

- The application of advanced, environmentally friendly production processes (such as VietGAP, Global GAP, etc.) has been increasingly popularized and replicated.

- The cultivation techniques and production processes adapted to climate change have also been promoted.

5. Contribute to industry growth, restructuring and export.

Thanks to the contributions of science and technology, the agro-forestry-fishery industry in the period of 2013-2020 have grown sustainably and stably in a positive direction.

Along with the enhancement of production value, the production structure is adjusted to promote the advantages of each locality, region, and the whole country, associated with market demand, and adapted to climate change.

Numerous livestock products have also expanded their access to markets such as pork, chicken, and honey. The structure of export products has changed continuously in the direction of diversifying categories, increased the rate of high quality as well as the rate of certification, and met the standards of some fastidious markets.
