The smart agriculture model at My Dong 2 Cooperative in Dong Thap province is considered the most modern rice production model in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam with outstanding features such as: Using smartphone to monitor pests, spraying, fertilizing with Drones, applying remote control of irrigation pumps and using mechanization tools in all stages of production in the rice fields. The cooperative formed rice fields “without footprints” – that mean not using manual labor in the rice fields.

Especially, the irrigation system of the cooperative has been managed and controlled by mobile phone and enable farmers to apply the Alternate Wetting and Drying Irrigation (AWD) method to reduce carbon emissions. Farmers now work very well in the fields, and they can keep their clothes clean while performing operations that operate machinery in the field. The combination of water level monitoring parameters, sensor tubes to control alternate wet and dry irrigation and pump control station allows the cooperative’s famers to adjust the water level in the field. The electric pump station system consists of two different pumps controlled by a sensor system, so the control station manager only needs to use a smartphone with internet connection to remotely control the system to supply water in the right time. Therefore, it has helped to reduce 30% of water pumping cost by shortening the time. Specifically, if a normal pump takes 2 to 3 days to fill up the field with water, this inverter pump only takes 1-2 hours to ensure full water for 170 ha.

The high technology application in agricultural sector is increasingly popular in Vietnam and is receiving the attention of both the state, businesses, cooperatives and farmers.
