Improving production of off-season Vegetables (Cabbage and tomato)

The research of improving production of off-season vegetables aims to identify the suitable crop species that could get high return and accepted by participated farmers in Houn and Pha Oudom districts, Oudomxai and Bokeo provinces, respectively. On-farm trials were conducted in the farmers’ field during 2009-2010 with 4 participated households (hh) in Phaoudom district, Bokeo Province, and 4 hh in Houn district, Oudomxai Province. A completely randomised 2*2*2 factorial block design was used for the experiment. Two varieties of cabbages (HAYA and KY) and two varieties of tomato (HDK tomato and 382) were test in two locations/districts (Houn and Pha Oudom districts). The experiment was carried out by 8 farmers or hh (one hh with a cultivated area of 1 rai). The results of on-farm trials showed that in Phaoudom district, the average yield of cabbage HAYA and KY was 539 kg and 695 kg/rai/hh, respectively; with the net income of 1,212,000 and 1,539,000 LAK/hh respectively. The average yield tomato HDK and 382 was 161 and 198 kilogram kg/rai, respectively; with an average net income of 434,000 and 527,000 LAK/hh, respectively. While, in Houn district, the average of cabbage HAYA and KY was 191 and 485 kg/rai/hh, respectively; with an average net income of 571,000 and 1,691,000 LAK/hh, respectively. The average yield of tomato HDK and 382 was 103 and 120 kg/rai/hh, respectively; with the average net income of 459,000 and 550,000 LAK/hh, respectively. Two different varieties of cabbage, and tomato planted in two location have significant different in yield and net income per household with a significant level (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of the experiment show that the yield of cultivated off-season vegetables was still low, because farmers still have less experience in growing these crops. There is a need to train farmers in proper management of these crops. However, from the results of Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation with farmers (PM&E) indicated that farmers were appreciated with those results of on-farm trails. There are new farmers planting these crops and the old farmers have expanded their cultivated, they could get more yield and income than previous.
