Since “Doi moi”, Viet Nam's agriculture in general and the rice sector, in particular, has made widely recognized great progress. From a country heavily damaged in decades of war, entered the period of nation-building with limited resources, a low starting point, Viet Nam economy has gradually grown from not being able to meet the food needs of the people and become a ranked agricultural product exporter in the world. The rice sector in Viet Nam has rapidly developed, from a quantity oriented one for hunger eradication, to a diversified and quality-oriented one targeting high-value segments and demanding export markets.
With the rapid development of the rice sector over the past 30 years, the rice sector plays an important role in agricultural and rural development, ensuring national food security, and contributing to regional food security. However, the development of the rice sector is facing challenges due to low efficiency, resource intensification, primary processing, pollution, and the impact of climate change, especially in the key rice-producing deltas. To overcome challenges, the rice sector needs to be reformed in line with the overall restructuring context of the agricultural sector.
Within the framework of the NARDT project, IPSARD conducted a report "Sustainable and better market access for rice - The case study of Viet Nam" to analyze and assess the rice sector in terms of production, trade, market, value chain and policy, potential impacts of factors on the future of the rice sector. This report also provides an overall picture of the rice sector in Viet Nam as well as evidence-based policy recommendations for the sustainable development of the sector for the regional research and connect countries in the Sub-Mekong region.
