New High Yielding Glutinous Rice Variety: Thadokkham 8

Thadokkham 8 (TDK 8) is the high yielding glutinous rice variety, selected from the 37th Thaddokkam’s cross. Crossed between RD10 and TDK1 with pedigree name DK37-B-3-2-1-B. TDK 8 was harbored some feature desirable characters from the parents as followed: high yielding, waxy rice, semi-dwarf plant type, good resistance to lodging; growth duration 130-135 days; wide  adaptability and photoperiodic non-sensitivity variety, can be grown well either wet or dry season  rice; suitable for the central part (including Xieng khouag province) and southern part; and some northern provinces such as Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Sayaboury, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang. Moderate resistance to the damage from bacteria leaf blight (Xanthomonas oryzea) and leaf blast (Pyricularia grisea) diseases and resistance to bakanee disease (Gibbella fujikuroi Saw); good response to nitrogen fertilizer; long grain variety with brown grain color, high milling quality of irrigated dry season rice with 65% of milled rice (TDK 1: 63%), 52% of head rice (TDK 1: 49%). Eating quality: soft rice, cooking rice is swollen and glossed. Weakness of TDK 8 is moderate susceptible from the damage of neck blast disease and brown plant hopper; susceptible to green leaf hopper and gall midge; and moderate susceptible to F+2 toxic. Response to the commercialized production in the country, the Rice and Cash Crops Research Center was disseminated TDK37-B-3-2-1-B to the main target of rice growing areas of the central and southern; and some northern provinces since dry season rice year 2008 and was named: Thadokkham 8
