Innovation model in Agriculture: Eli-Seeder of Brooklyn Bridge to Cambodia – Technology solution for rice farmers

Regional research “Agricultural innovations review in Sub-Mekong region countries” in the framework of the project “Network for Agriculture and Rural Development Think-tanks for Countries in Mekong sub-region” – November 2022 - April 2023.

The Eli-Seeder was researched and developed by Brooklyn Bridge to Cambodia (B2B), a company aiming to empower and enable Cambodian farmers, especially women farmers, to become more independent, to improve their living standards and increase opportunities for themselves and their children.

Eli-Seeder is a machine created to solve the problems of traditional rice transplanting method such as being labor-intensive and vulnerable to floods, droughts and insects through the modern direct seeding method with uniform spacing. Compared to conventional method, Eli-Seeder has a greater yield, uses fewer seeds, saves time, and can plant 12 rows of seeds with a spacing of 15, 20, or 25 cm. Specifically, Eli-Seeder is suitable for both dry and moist soil.

Eli Seeder is an important machine in improving rice yields in Cambodia. Expanding the product's use, however, still confronts several obstacles such as changing the thinking and habits of local farmers, the slow speed of technology adoption by farmers.
